General Bellydance Class Information

Bellydance, In General:

This ancient dance form is more properly known as Raqs Sharqi ("Dance of the Orient" or "Dance of the East" in Arabic), and is uniquely suited to a woman's natural movements.

Dance classes are a great way to have fun, learn something new about yourself and other cultures, express yourself artistically, and beat the blues, all in a relaxed, accepting and supportive environment.

This dance can be enjoyed by all ages and body types! Pregnant women are welcome with a note from their doctor.

Class Descriptions:

Bellydance Basics: This class is geared towards beginners: people who have never taken a bellydance (or other dance) class before, as well as newer dancers who have only taken a few previous classes. The emphasis will be on fun and learning something new about yourself and other cultures. No matter what your body shape, age, or personality, you will look great and feel great Belly Dancing! It will benefit you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Students are expected to take both 6-week sessions of Bellydance Basics: "Sun" and "Moon", before moving up to Level 2. You can take them in any order. The sun session features more fast and sharp movements, while the moon session features more slow and flowing movements. Students will be accepted in the 1st and 2nd weeks of a session, otherwise you will need to wait until the next session to sign up. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

Level 2 Bellydance: Continue your dance journey in this class, where we will explore many different topics, such as veilwork, finger cymbals, and choreography, while continuing to polish basic technique. At least 3 months of previous bellydance instruction is required. This is a mixed level class that can accomodate both continuing beginners and intermediate level dancers: modifications will be given for each movement to make it simpler for newer dancers or more challenging for more experienced dancers. Most sessions allow drop-in options for those who can't attend the full session. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

Mixed Level Drills and Conditioning: This class is offered sporadically throughout the year and offers additional practice opportunities for all levels. This special extended one hour and 15-minute class focuses on drills and conditioning/flexibility exercises, and is a great supplement to your regular classes. This class takes place at the TajMaHaala studio, with a maximum of 6 students each session. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

Continuing Bellydance: This class is recommended for dancers who have been taking classes for a year or more and want to focus even more deeply on their Belly Dance practice (ask instructor if you are unsure whether to take this class). I will assume you know the basic movements of Belly Dance, such as shimmies, hip circles, and traveling movements, and are ready to take your practice to the next level. We will focus on technique and choreography. Choreography sessions must be signed up for in full, but I do allow drop-ins for technique sessions. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

What to Wear:

Anything that you feel comfortable in and that allows a range of motion: for example, a tank top or tee shirt with a cotton skirt, leggings, shorts or sweat pants. Usually we dance in bare feet, but if that is not comfortable, please feel free to wear ballet slippers, dance shoes or soft sandals.
